One pillowcase, 51 cm by 76 cm, Grade 6A long fibre mulberry silk with a hidden zip. Same silk as every case we sell. Black is the colour people buy when the pillowcase has to disappear.

Black is the colour people buy when the pillowcase has to disappear. On a dark bed it reads as part of the bedding rather than as an accessory, which is why it is the one most often bought by people who were not sure they wanted a silk pillowcase at all.

The silk is the same on every colour we sell: 100 per cent mulberry, Grade 6A long fibre, woven to 22 momme. The colour is the only thing that changes.

The practical argument for black is make-up and hair product. Neither shows on it between washes the way it does on white, so a black case looks presentable for longer even though it needs washing just as often.

It closes with a hidden zip rather than an envelope flap, so the pillow stays where you put it and there is nothing to tuck at 11pm.

Fits a standard Irish pillow at 51 cm by 76 cm. A king pillow will not fit, and we would rather say that here than on the returns page.

What a silk pillowcase does is reduce friction. That is a property of the weave, not a treatment, and it is the honest version of everything else said about silk pillowcases.

The number that matters is momme, which is how silk is weighed rather than counted. Silk thread is too fine for a useful thread count, so a piece is weighed instead. At 22 momme this is a dense, heavy silk. Below about 19 a pillowcase wears through quickly; much above 22 and you are into curtain weight and lose the drape.

Care is the part people get wrong, and it is simple. Cold water, no enzymes, no bleach, no dryer, dry in the shade. A mesh laundry bag makes a machine cycle safe. Treated that way a 22 momme case lasts years rather than seasons.

Start with the pillow, not the pillowcase

A silk case that is stretched over a pillow it was not cut for wears at the seam first, and that is the one failure that is not the fabric's fault.
